Missing Shots? Could It Be Your Shot String?

Shot string is length of the pellet cloud measured from the very front pellet to the very last one as it moves through the air towards a target. A ton of people know about patterning and the concept behind it, but very few take the time learn about their shot string.

The easiest way to tell the differences between the two is patterning tells you where all the pellets are hitting, shot string tells you how long it takes for all the pellets to hit. Lets look a little deeper into the subject and see if your shot string is a problem and if you can improve your shot string.

Lets start with some of what affects your shot string- type of choke, pressures from firing and shot hardness/type of shot. Now all those factors determine the amount of deformation to the shot (shot that is no longer round like it was prior to firing). More shot deformation equals longer shot string, and that’s not good.

missing shot

Type of Choke

If you run a cylinder bore (no choke) there is nothing at the end of the barrel for the shot to get forced through. If on the other hand you have a full choke, then the shot has to squeeze its way through the choke which can cause shot deformation and lengthen your shot string. But we have round up of the best gun safes available in the market and recommended some top models for you according to their sizes and usability.

Pressures from firing

As the powder ignites and begins to propel the shot down the barrel with a massive amount of acceleration causing the shot at the back of the pack to get deformed (compressed) from the pressures.

Type of shot/hardness of the shot

This ties directly into the other 2 variables I talked about; soft shot will deform far more easily and affect your shot string. Take steel and tungsten iron pellets for example; they are significantly harder then lead and are not deformed by the rapid acceleration out of a gun barrel so you will have a better (shorter) shot string.

So how can you easily improve your shot string (and patterning)? Spend the extra change and get quality ammunition to use. Look for something that is made of hard shot (high antimony count), platted shot (copper or nickel) and steel shot. Try and avoid the cheap soft lead ones. The harder the shot= the less it will become deformed= the smaller the shot string and the better the pattern.

A quick, down and dirty way to compare shot deformation between types is to open up a shell and grab a couple pieces of shot, then grab some pliers (channel locks work great) and slowly squeeze the shot making note of how much pressure you used and how much it deforms. Then try the test on some other types and compare.…

How to Choose a Computer for Home Recording?

There are a lot of powerful machines built in the last few years and this entails a lot of possibilities for home recording. A while ago parameters of modern computers were available only for large recording studios. Home recording is lurking in the ether, making the topic of music production more accessible and lasting the level of technical sophistication.

A question about the selection of an ideal workstation for the studio is quite difficult to answer unanimously – due to individual preferences for the brand / design, etc..

It’s worth seeing that we are at the epicenter of constant competition between PCs and Apple products. This never-ending battle between manufacturers of computers propels an economy, thus making a huge rash of brand new gear on increasingly shorter time. According to Moore’s Law, optimal performance on a chip doubles in consecutive years in almost equal intervals.

I have to deal every day with both types of computers, and my opinion is still more favorable toward the PC. It’s because of the easier possibility of upgrading and more control over the system. Mac is more mobile and a bit better looking. Despite this, i would rather have my good old PC.

What parameters does your computer should have to launch DAW?

    1. At least 1 GB of RAM

In practice it should be 4 GB today. Powerful applications are process-devouring and can prevent the smooth functioning of the other apps running in the background. The more RAM you have, the more your computer will be able to handle in the way of plugins, effects and so forth.

    1. 500 GB of hard drive space

I would suggest, however, get a disk with a capacity of 1 TB. The sessions leave a lot of garbage, and one song is a lot of audio tracks.

    1. …and 7200 rpm

It is also advantageous to have fast hard drive.

    1. 3.2 GHz processor

I recommend in this case CPU Intel Dual Core Model. They are very efficient.

    1. LCD 22″ or higher

Your DAW should work on full screen mode, right? With more space on the screen everything is cleaner.

    1. FireWire

Most interfaces connects to the computer using a FireWire port.

    1. Peripherals

A MIDI controller, dedicated keyboard, comfortable mouse etc…

    1. Microphone

When a musician is trying to play his track for the tenth time, you need to help him somehow. Turn on your mic and tell him what to do patiently.

So, we’ve covered the basics of what you should look for when buying or building a computer for home recording. Before you rush out to the store, check your computers specifications to see whether your system is already capable of performing its tasks well.…

What’s the World’s Smallest Synthesizer?

Although there’s a lot of musical instruments in the world, it’s hard to classify synthesizers as those of small size. Guys from Bleep Labs, online shop with “curious gadgets from the future” found it as a challenge. As a result of their struggle with electronics, we received probably the world’s smallest synth. Moreover, you can build it yourself, because it’s totally open-source! Let me introduce you the Nebulophone.

Now it’s time for some features:

The Nebulophone is an Arduino based synth with a stylus keyboard. It was designed as kit for Handmade Music Austin and features:
– Five waveforms (ramp, triangle, square, pulse, and noise)
– Adjustable decay
– Light controlled analog low-pass filter with five adjustable LFO LED modes.
– Four arpeggio modes with adjustable rate.
– Portamento with three speed settings.
– Pitch range and keyboard temperament controls. Switch between major and chromatic keyboard mapping.
– Hypernoise 3000 mode
– Infrared control of arp rate with other Andromeda Space Rocker devices.
– Open-source Aduino code

There are a few downloadable files which have been done for customers, who want to build their own Nebulophone:

  • Source code in C v01
  • Schematic v02
  • and Instruction v02

Kit costs $55, but if you have no patience – they can do the work for you and it will cost $80 for the Build version of the Nebulophone.
It’s quite interesting, it’s small and I think it’s fun to make music with that toy.

And what do you think?…

When is the best time to start playing music?

Many of people question themselves if the age is not a limitation in the reference to the learning to play. It is heard often “am too old for that”, or the million of different excuses which theoretically justify our checking in the way to the top of musical possibilities.

In fact, if a man gets involved more in one action, he more regrets that he did not begin learning earlier. And so was with me – I started http://www.themusictips.com/best-time-to-start-playing/interesting in music at the age of 12. Two years later my dad bought me first pair of drumsticks, and I went on the first lesson of playing the drums after several months of independent playing.

I remember these times with fondness and a bit of shivers on my back, because this was something new for me. Something I wanted very much – to imbibe knowledge about my instrument and exercise. I exercised more and more and waited for the next lesson every the week.

I was able to spend the whole days on the practice snare rudiments on sofa and pillows;)

If I started playing drums at the age of 10, if even 5 – who knows in what “technical condition” I would be now.

For those deliberations motivates us often the conviction that we are not the best at all. We don’t play as perfectly as we seemed.
But we still have a goal.

You have continually the enthusiasm, which causes that you feel the same shiver, when you had the guitar in your hands first time. Your instrument which accumulated the hectolitres of Your sweat and epidermis.

In my opinion, the age is not the limitation in learning to play the instrument.

The age is NOT a limitation to enjoy your passion!

Young people asks this question the most often, just at the beginning of their adventure with music. On the other hand, youth in the “rebellious” age “powered by the motor of the passion” and the aroused love to rock’n’roll, takes the guitar in their hands and pours their emotions on the instrument.

However, wanting to think about playing seriously, they come across on limitations – verbatim from all sides:

Well, where do we know that from?

The conclusion which pushes me after these considerations is the fact, that we put restrictions by ourselves. We try to excuse our lack of the commitment by oneself.

So what is the answer on the question from the topic?
Your time on the conquest of the world of music is right now! Your future is in your hands. And the future of rock’n’roll also;)

Don’t lose the time on excuses – a good time management will cause, that you will sit down with your instrument and You will fall in love with music anew.…

How to become a rock star?

People may say that You don’t actually need to be talented to become a rockstar. But if You really want your dream come true, you have to stick into the rules. I believe that leading by example gives You opportunity to learn from one’s mistakes.

1. Get the instrument or vocal lessons

Improve your technique, attend to workshops, learn how to play by watching the instrumental DVDs. The important thing You should remember – absolutely nothing comes automatically, when it’s about learning how to rock. To traverse the long and winding road, you have to put the first step.

2. Practice, practice, practice

Practice in your free time instead of hanging around on web. Mobilize Yourself to become the best guitarist, best drummer or best vocalist – and prove it by practicing. Only frequent and regular exercise habit leads to deliver the best results. You’ll see changes in your technique – changes for the better definitely!

3. Work with the band over the material. Select the best concert songs

When you form a band, you’re working on sound together. Making your horizons wider and getting more character and style. Then You crystallize songs that are slowly gaining the desired shapes. To come a band into being, play concerts – building a connection with fans is a priority of any rock star.

4. Build your audience

I know it sounds a little weird on the first look. However, only a group of faithful fans raises your team on a pedestal. So open the door for all your music enthusiasts – encourage them to share it among themselves, organize fan club – in a word – do everything your favorite bands did, and what made them THAT popular.

5. Popularize Your band on the net

Maybe it is time to think about giving Your band the Internet identity? Involve members of the band and take time to register the band on any social networking sites (social media). Think about branding, give out some CDs, and above all, collect as many friends as You can. When you reach a certain threshold in terms of number of friends, will drive the machine itself.

6. Record a professional demo and publish it on the Web

Nowadays, amateur records from the microphone do not have too much clout in case of the young band promotion. Recording Studios now offer a really solid, quality demo for a quite nice price. That’s the reason why now is the best time for a career in music -we have everything at hand!

7. Send Your promo-pack to the record labels

Have no fear, just drop the envelope into the mailbox. Send your work to both small and large studios – let them know about Your music! Why don’t You try? You must be sure that your music has the potential to appear in the wider group. You know the value of Your own work, so treat each sent disc as a form of promotion. What’s more – if you encounter rejection, just hold on to Your target. We usually fear about rejection.

8. Never give up!

Still working on the quality of your music you’ll confirm that you deserve to be called a professional musician, and your band will gain a greater status in the eyes of the listeners. Well, they’ll certainly notice the change when at the next concert, you’ll present a pretty fresh material – as opposed to a band that rested on his laurels after sending a demo.

And what rules you are aiming on the way to the top of rock’n’roll? ;)
Feel free to comment!

How to play a stunning concert?

One of the main factors that influences on the positive assessment of Your band is well-played concert. Public performances are exactly the most memorable events, and a impulsion to wider concern about bands composition. At a concert You have the advantage that You feel the response from the audience.
You perfectly watch how they react to Your sounds and how they give the bear the emotion filled with Your music.

So how to make Your band sounded live extremely good?

1. Make a general rehearsal

This is the fundamental of every public performance. Regardless of whether You’re playing a small gig tomorrow at the music club, or great outdoor concert – rehearsal should be played on the same high level. Assemble a team and spend a few hours to play the only songs, that You will play on stage.

2. Create setlist

Adjust the pieces that would sound best on Your next concert. Take into account the circumstances – whether it is a concert promoting Your new album, a charity concert, a larger star support, or maybe a club event? The set list should include the best songs of Your band to bring You the best possible light. Remember to have in store 2-3 songs for the encore.

3. Prepare and submit technical rider

You have to find out if the place where You will play has everything You need to go on stage. Delivering the technical specification to the sound engineers is generally the task of the band manager. He must take into account the requirements, the stage preparation, and often other, smaller or larger wishes of Your crew, like multi-pack of water for everyone.

4. Prepare instruments for the concert

If Your guitar wears the same strings for three years, and drummer keeps his drums in a dusty basement – it’s time for small cleanings. Clean Your instrument thoroughly and get it ready to play. Take a moment to a technical review. Take a look if any moving parts are not loose.
When the equipment is already set up, cleaned, and tuned – pack it into the carrying case so You can easily move it to the car.

5. Do a good warm-up

Before going on stage it is very important to warm-up. When Your supporting band starts to play the final pieces on the stage, sit somewhere in the corner of back stage dressing room with Your instrument and stretch Your fingers, wrists, arms and shoulders. Play a few licks so You can avoid unforeseen mistakes at the concert.

6. Show Yourself at Your best

This is the most important point so far. Remember that You’re as good as Your last show. Be confident and focus on your role. At the same time, remember to be yourself. Enjoy the music, watch the fans jumping and have fun at the concert as much pleasure. No matter if You play for 100, 1,000, or 10,000 people – Your attitude should always be positive.

I hope You’ll find these few tips useful – prepare yourself to enter the scene and take it! Personally, I love to squeeze myself the last drops of energy, because then I feel that everything happening on stage, I do the best I can.

What are Your best practices for a successful show?
